IP-Geolocation Widgets

Anyone have any luck getting the WordPress GeoTrack widget to work?  I love the idea of letting people see where my users are from.  I think location is an interesting dynamic in the dialogue that occurs on blogs.  Where someone is from very often informs their opinions.

For example, a recent article in the NYTimes grabbed my attenion: the gist of it was that Silicon Valley is the only good place to do a startup these days.  Fred points out that the author is from San Jose, which obviously colors his opinion to some degree.  I’m not saying that the article is bunk based on the author’s location, but the context of authorship location does affect the story, no doubt.

I want to add more IP-Geolocation context to my blog.  I want readers to know where I am posting from.  I want commentors locations to be publicly exposed.  I want map mashups to display all this information.

The GeoTrack plugin is an interesting step in this direction, but I could not install it… I tried for hours.  Lots of dumb php errors about files not existing in the right place (when they clearly did, in fact, exist).  Anyone else have this problem?

Loki is an excellent product, might provide part of what you’re looking for.

    Hey Andrew,

check out Plazes.com - they won’t tell you where your readers are, but it’s a neat way to let other people know about your location. They also provide some customizeable bling for your blog, e.g. a widget that displays on a Google Map which WiFi you used last.

This is terrific, thanks Fabian. I will likely add this to my blog once I get some more time to play with it.
