I'm an old school gamer, but I thought the NES was what made video games mainstream.  The SNES was the peak of the old school gaming era (platform style games - super mario...etc.).  PlayStation started a new era of 3D gaming (aka next-gen), then Xbox pioneered online-broadband-console gaming.

I'm not hardcore on PC gaming, so my view might be skewed here.</description>
