Application-Specific Volume?

I generally prefer to listen to music on my laptop (so last.fm will scrobble my songs).

However, it’s frustrating that I have to either sign-out of my IM-client, edit the sound preferences in my IM-client, or deal with the obnoxious “ding” of IM windows.  I don’t want to permanently remove my IM sounds (and other application sounds), but I want the ability to mute certain applications and not others.

I need application-specific volume.

I hear this will be a feature in Vista, but I’d rather not wait until I upgrade.  Does anyone have a good freeware or open-source solution to this problem that they recommend?

i have been looking for this for a long time. its a big issue in a dorm room where everyone wants to listen to your music, but not be bothered by constant instant messaging.

Apparantly, IndieVolume is a utility for per app audio control.

Good to hear from you John.

I heard about indievolume, but I was hoping for freeware/open-source. I will totally donate to software if I like it, but I’m not a big fan of paying for it.
