Bloglines UI Gripe

So, I sat down to read a few articles in bloglines last night; just 3 or 4 and then I was going to quit.  I have about 400 unread items in my VC folder, so I went to click on the little plus sign next to the folder to expand it out and choose a blog I like.  I slipped and accidentially clicked five pixels to the right, directly on the category name “VC”.  This caused me to open all the unread articles in my VC folder in the reading pane, which marks them all as read!  Now, the only way to make sure I’m up-to-date on all those blogs is to either read them all in one sitting last night or open up their respective sites and read away, which completely defeats the purpose of an aggregator.  I was hoping for an “undo” option, but none was to be found.  I know that undo functionality with respect to view manipulations is rarely implemented (undo is typically limited to operations that affect the data model, not the view of the data), but undo really would have been handy last night.  Ugh.

You’re right, that is annoying. I’m pretty sure that while you were sill viewing all the messages in the folder you could have clicked “Mark all new” to essentially do an “undo”

Thanks Michael. I blogged about this problem because it happens all the time and it really annoys me. I was hoping someone would give me a solution. You’re a rockstar. I’ll try it out next time.

I solved this problem by reading my blogs in my email client. To accomplish this I wrote a RSS->IMAP gateway, which is now available as a free service. This lets me mark individual messages as new or read, and also flag, forward, filter, search, and archive messages, just as though they were mail. It also lets me read my messages offline, which is very nice if you travel very much, or even if you just want something to do while commuting on the subway.

Very cool Adam. Email is the ultimate killer app, and I think that a smart and easy RSS to email implementation could have a significant impact on the mass adoption of RSS.
