This site is no longer being updated. Here is Andrew Parker's new blog.

MX’s and CNAME’s and A’s, Oh My!

We’re not in Kansas anymore, Toto.  I’m currently making a mess of DNS records as I move to new hosting.  I have to wait for DNS servers to cycle at 1 AM, and then hopefully I should be in the clear.

That’s right.  You read correctly.  I got the call.  I’m moving to the big leagues, the game.  Put me in coach. New hosting.

In all seriousness, I’m moving to new hosting for four reasons:

  1. My own domain.  andrewparker.net has been sitting around open for years, like a lost puppy at the pound.  I decided to give it a nice home.
  2. *Blog Bling.*  (Show me your plat grill!)  Really though.  I love wordpress.com, but it doesn’t support any javascript.  I’m envious of other bloggers’ cool widgets, and I want to start playing with them on my own blog.
  3. Ads.  Wordpress.com doesn’t believe in allowing it’s bloggers to advertise.  It’s an interesting choice… but not one that will work if my blog ever gets some steam.
  4. Feeds.  Wordpress.com has practically zero feed support, and I can’t use FeedBurner with it… That’s simply unacceptable considering the only way I read my favorite blogs is via feeds.

So, my new blog address is blog.andrewparker.net.  It’s not complete yet.  I’m still tweaking the theme.  I haven’t picked up FeedBurner, and I’m having trouble transferring over my comments.  I’ll probably have it all cleaned up by the end of the week.

This is the last post on this site.  All future posts will be made at blog.andrewparker.net.

Side Note: I totally dig my new hosting.  I’m at DreamHost.  It’s a steal and generally quite well-reviewed.  Most importantly, the control panel is incredibly easy to use… far easier than CPanel.  I made a promo code that you can use to sign up for 30 dollars off any plan: SAVE30DREAM .  Use it… don’t use it; I don’t really care.  Regardless, I highly recommend you use DreamHost if you need a hosting service or are unhappy with your existing hosting service.
