I got a job. A big job! A job I totally daydreamed about as I grinded through my days at Homestead. I’m going to start as an Analyst at Union Square Ventures on September 5th.
Perhaps some back-story will help explain why I’m so excited about this job. Though I have been following some crushingly popular blogs, like /., for years, I didn’t really realize the quality of information available in blogs until about a year ago. That’s when I started at Homestead, and also when I started picking up other popular blogs like TechCrunch. I’m not sure why these two events coincided, perhaps being in a startup exposed me to startup news sources, but I don’t remember many other people at Homestead following TechCrunch or anything else along those lines, except for John Tokash. Anyway, I found Fred’s blog from a rave review in TechCrunch. From Fred’s blog I found Union Square Ventures, where Brad blogs with Fred, and Charlie’s blog. I often daydreamed about the possibility of working for these guys… I thought my background in user experience would be valuable in the due diligence process, my PM experience would help in identifying valuable entrepreneurs (I have always thought that the skills of good, bureaucracy-cutting PMs are similar to the skills of strong entrepreneurs), and I have some familiarity with VC in general because my father is in the business at Ampersand Ventures. Furthermore, I have been eating, sleeping, breathing consumer internet blogs for the past year. I know I’m not unique in that last respect, but it provides strong motivation and interest in the subject matter that you can’t fake. I was doing half this job for free in my spare time, and now someone wants to pay me for it!
My interest in working at Union Square Ventures completely pre-dated Charlie’s recent departure. In my daydreaming, I never pictured myself as replacing Charlie; I thought I could be a strong supplement to their team. But, as fate would have it, Charlie left just as I was transitioning to NYC, and I managed to land the job.
I see this job as an invaluable chance to build contacts, learn VC, and be a major participant in the future of consumer internet. I have always considered going to B-School, and I totally agree with Charlie’s assessment of this job as MBA 2.0. I’m certain that the next Wozniaks will be walking through the front door of the office daily, and I’m elated to see what they’re doing, where they’re going, how they’re thinking, etc. I will have my finger on the pulse of consumer internet innovation for the next two years. Everything about this job makes sense at this point in my life, and I couldn’t be happier about it.
I held off posting this news for awhile… I got the job last Thursday, and I’m not sure why I waited. I think part of me thought it was too good to be true. Like some fairy might snap her fingers, and it all would melt away. Anyway, I’m posting now, it’s out there, and I’m stoked!
Side note: I wrote this post from the new Mac store at Fifth Ave and 59th st in NY. It’s an incredibly sexy building and functions well as a free internet cafe. I highly recommend you check it out if you’re in the area. I’ve made this place my “base of operations” for scouring craigslist as I search for apts in Manhattan.

The random thing is that I used to work in the GM Building right above your head before I came to USV. :)
Congratulations!
I’ve been following this opportunity (and Fred, Brad and Charlie’s blog) for some time too.
This is a great opportunity to work with some of the best in the business. I’m jealous.
We, the semi-anonymous blog readers of the world, expect great things.
Cheers.
Congratulations! Just make sure that they still give you time to continue blogging :)
Congratulations, Andrew! I’m sure you’re gonna kick ass in your new role.
